"Social networking sites encourage people to be more public about their personal lives. Because intimate details of our lives can be posted so easily, users are prone to bypass the filters they might normally employ when talking about their private lives. What's more, the things they post remain available indefinitely."

''She believes that social media is not only a distraction to teenagers who have become addicted to checking their news feeds, but that it can lead to psychological and health issues. Her research shows that a number of anxiety and personality disorders stem from spending too much time on the Internet.

Social Media Anxiety Disorder, for example, occurs when people become addicted. Social media, she explains, may draw some teenagers away from having relationships with themselves and with people around them. They also put too much effort into following trends they see online instead of being themselves.''

A good example of how even young teens can step outside of the box and realise what's happening and the negative effects that social media can have on peers and society.

"According to e-Marketer, global social networking revenues will exceed $10 billion 2013. Most social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and many others offer their services to members for free, yet still net significant income. In fact, according to Mashable Business, Facebook earned $1.6 billion in revenues in the first half of 2011, and was on pace to achieve more than $3 billion in revenues by year end."

An interesting side of the argument, is the revenue and profit made by these social media companies reaped in from the countless hours milllions of people waste on their online life.
